Acne Scar Treatment: Patience and Consistency for Lasting Results

Acne can often leave behind stubborn scars, even after the breakouts have healed. While acne itself may fade, the scars can remain, becoming a long-term concern. Thanks to advancements in dermatology and dermocosmetic treatments, acne scars can now be effectively treated, with significant and lasting improvements.

How Do Acne Scars Form?

Acne scars are typically a result of inflamed lesions, particularly nodulocystic acne, which forms beneath the skin without breaking the surface. Repeated flare-ups of acne can damage the skin’s collagen, leading to atrophic (depressed) scars. In some cases, intense, recurrent acne can cause an overproduction of collagen during healing, leading to raised scars such as keloids or hypertrophic scars. As acne heals, it can also trigger the formation of small capillaries, which may result in redness that can leave marks on the skin. The type of scar plays a key role in determining the most appropriate treatment approach.

Treatment Options & Duration

Acne scar treatment requires patience and consistent effort. In our practice, we offer a variety of treatment options, including subcision, laser therapy, PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), mesotherapy, and chemical peels. Depending on the type and depth of the scars, these treatments can be combined or used individually to achieve the best results. Treatment is typically planned over at least 3 sessions, spaced about a month apart. For deeper or more severe scars, additional sessions may be necessary. On average, acne scar treatment takes between 3 to 6 months, with noticeable improvements after each session.

With continued treatment, patients can expect to see highly satisfying and long-lasting results.
