Initially, Argon and carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers were used to treat benign congenital vascular lesions (such as port-wine stains and hemangiomas). While these lesions could improve with treatment, they left unacceptable levels of scarring behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past 20 years, the development of lasers has revolutionized the treatment of various conditions, including congenital vascular or brown spots, tattoos, scars, and wrinkles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the properties of laser light?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The term laser in, which stands for &#8220;Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation.&#8221; Lasers are high-intensity beams that have the following properties:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Monochromatic<\/strong>: It has a single wavelength.<br><strong>Coherent<\/strong>: The light waves are in phase with each other.<br><strong>Collimated<\/strong>: The light spreads parallel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laser light can be focused with very high energy into a small point. It is produced in an optical cavity containing a medium such as gas (e.g., argon, krypton, carbon dioxide), liquid (e.g., dye lasers), or solid (e.g., ruby, neodymium:yttrium-aluminium-garnet, alexandrite). When molecules in the laser medium are stimulated, they emit photons when they return to their stationary state. In different laser media, light is produced at a single wavelength, ranging from the visible light spectrum (400-700 nm) to the infrared spectrum (over 700 nm). Vascular skin lesions contain a substance called oxygenated hemoglobin, which is highly absorbed by visible light at wavelengths of 418, 542, and 577 nm. Brown formations in the skin, which contain melanin, absorb both visible and infrared light. Infrared lasers are quite damaging, as they are absorbed by water in the cells and between them.
